Considering that the Atlantic Forest is one of the threatened biomes in
the world and therefore the action for its preservation and restoration
are priorities in the policies of biodiversity conservation, the
creation of the Acaraí Park represents a victory for Santa Catarina.
This
conservation unit with an approximate area of 6.667 hectares located on
the coastal plain of the island of São Francisco do Sul, added the
archipelago Tamboretes belonging to the municipality of São Francisco do
Sul, is a governmental and civil society initiative to ensure the
preservation of areas of
scenic
value and relevance in biodiversity and most important continuous of
coastal ecosystems
in
Santa Catarina formed by the sandbank of Praia Grande, and expand the
knowledge of our pre-colonial and colonial history. The hydro complex of
this area, formed by the Acaraí river (which gives its name to the
Park), the headwaters of the Perequê river and the Capivaru pond, is
responsible for shelter, reproduction and feeding of diverse aquatic
species, which added to the Sandbank Vegetation and Lowland Woods of the
Atlantic Forest constitute the place for the protection of the fauna and
flora, including the endemic and endangered species.
The
creation of a park is a purposeful action to establish a regional policy
aimed – in particular – to tourism and regional
development and conciliation process of municipal development with the
environmental conservation on sustainable bases.

The need
to promote environmental education, providing through the contact of
people with nature, awareness of the conservation of the natural
resources and the development of values and attitudes related to good
quality of life, ratified the initiative to crate conservation units.
The
support for creation and implementation of Acaraí Park comes from the
resources of the environmental compensation due to licensing carried out
by FATMA of a unit of the company VEGA do Sul S/A.
